Throughout this series, we're featuring talented young American musicians performing in iconic venues in Europe.
The students have not only had the exciting experience of performing in some historic buildings in front of international audiences, but they've also enjoyed the educational and cultural benefits of overseas travel and, for some of them, for the very first time.
In this program, we're featuring performances at the famous Cadogan Hall in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in London.
It's a classic venue for these students to perform in, and first, we're going to hear three pieces from the BASIS Phoenix concert band in Arizona.
First up, "Fanfare Americana" by Randall Standridge.
♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ [ Applause ] Let's hear another from the BASIS Phoenix concert band.
This is "Softly Speaks the Night."
♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ [ Applause ] >> My name is Jared Bushee.
I'm from New York, but I currently teach at BASIS Phoenix in Phoenix, Arizona.
The favorite piece?
This is hard because we had a really diverse program today, but the kids seem to really like "Southampton March" because it was a nod and an ode to the British culture here.
♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ [ Applause ] >> No doubt the students enjoyed playing in Cadogan Hall.
Let's hear some more from BASIS Phoenix.
But this time, it's their string orchestra with a familiar theme.
♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ [ Applause ] >> So, my name is Chuck Stewart.
I am from BASIS Phoenix in Phoenix, Arizona.
I teach string orchestra grades 8 through 12.
The students have just gotten such a great experience of a new culture and a new country and just the experience of exploring the great -- the great city of London.
I just look for what's going to be great for the students from an educational standpoint, but also enjoyable for the audience with a good variety.
>> Chuck Stewart from BASIS Phoenix and a rousing reception for his students at the Cadogan Hall.
Next, let's enjoy the unbridled spirit of the Western Kentucky just that, "Unbridled Spirit" by Brant Karrick.
♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ [ Applause ] "Unbridled Spirit" from the Western Kentucky Symphonic Band, the Director of Bands and Professor of Music.
>> Well, the trip just started, honestly, so, right now, I think the highlight so far, for me, has been the concert.
Having an opportunity to collaborate on that stage with those incredible student musicians is great, but we have a parade in a couple of days and we've got -- we're going to see lots of the area's, you know, historic sites, which is going to be really, really cool.
>> Now let's hear some more from these talented students.
This is "Horkstow Grange" from "Lincolnshire Posy," conducted by graduate conductor Miss Brenna Derby.
♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ [ Cheers and applause ] >> My name is Taylin Hamilton.
I am a student at Western Kentucky University.
I am a senior and a music education major, and I play the clarinet.
To me, the trip has just started, since we just got here, arrived on Sunday.
So we toured a little bit of London and we performed this concert.
Yes, I have enjoyed it.
I feel like London has a very lively atmosphere compared to Bowling Green, Kentucky, so it's really interesting being immersed in the culture of London and getting to learn more about what London is and what the music of London is, especially as a musician and a future music educator.
>> The experience of playing overseas brings the students so much more than simply performing abroad.
Next, appropriately, Symphonic Band with "My Old Kentucky Home."
♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ [ Applause ] >> The benefit is incredible.
I got to come here in 1987 as a college student.
We just did the parade.
We didn't do a concert performance, as well.
But for these students, we had, I think, about 165 students that had never been on an airplane, another 100 and something that had never been out of the country.
So, for these students to have an opportunity to come to Great Britain for the first time and to perform on this program and also in the London New Year's Day Parade, I think is just really an incredible, life-changing experience for them.
>> Gary Schallert, Director of Bands at Western Kentucky University.
Let's conclude this edition of "Youth Music of the World" with "Hands Across the Sea."
♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ [ Applause ] Well, I hope you've enjoyed those great performances from these young Americans performing in one of London's most famous concert venues.
Our thanks to BASIS Phoenix and to Western Kentucky University.
Join us again soon for more "Youth Music of the World."
for now and thank you very much indeed for watching.
